Over the years, I acquired a wide range of information on the subject of meditation. There are so many styles which can lead to different results. The following suggestions universally apply to nearly all styles and should be used as a guide to those who are new to meditation.
1. Tall Spine
It is important to keep the spine extended, straight or “tall” during mediation, so that energy (prana) can properly flow. For some, it may be helpful to use a wall or chair as support. Others may be able to maintain a tall spine without using aids.
2. Comfortable Seat
Until such time as you feel comfortable, you may become distracted. To become comfortable, you may wish to sit on as many as three folded
blankets to release the knees below your hips or you can even sit on a chair. Whatever it takes, find comfort and balance in a steady seat. Feel entirely relaxed in your body.
3. Object to focus on
You can train your mind to concentrate by focusing on an object. The object may be your breath at the navel center, the flame of a candle or your “third eye” between your eyebrows. Whatever you pick, find one that is pleasing or calming to you.
4. Quiet Mind
While focusing on your object, sense your thoughts beginning to quiet. Find a breath that is smooth, without interruption. Your attention should be completely dedicated to your object. As extraneous thoughts enter your mind, let them gently pass, and return your focus on your object. Feel both pathways through the noise are open and balanced, as this greatly effects the ability for the mind to become quiet.
5. A Still body equals a Still mind
Resist the urge to move during your meditation. When you begin meditating, you might feel somewhat restricted by this required stillness. As your body and mind become more familiar with the process, bodily stillness will become effortless. Remind yourself that when your body is still, so will it be with your mind.
6. Mediation is a tool, not to live in, but to grow from
Most of us will benefit greatly from a daily meditation practice. The point is not to walk through life in a meditative state, but to promote inner growth, sensitivity and awareness through your meditation practice.
7. Consistency is key
The benefits of meditation can traverse your daily routine. However, you can’t expect long term growth without consistent practice. Be diligent about your meditation routine. If you can’t practice everyday, then arrange a schedule that works for you and discipline yourself to stick with it. Whenever possible, meditate the same time of day so the body and mind become trained to accommodate this new pattern in your life.
8. Meditation will change your life for the better
There is no question that stilling the body and listening to the mind enables calm and builds awareness that, in turn, can positively impact your life. Everyone will follow a slightly different path to achieve this result. Meditation is the vessel through which a more purposeful life can be realized.
9. You need a teacher
Most knowledge can be enhanced through the efforts of a compassionate and committed teacher who you trust. Find someone you connect with and who has the experience and background to guide you.
10. Ultimately it’s up to you
It’s your life, and you have choices. Remember, not all meditation styles lead to the same results. What you think, what you say, how you act and what you aspire to become profoundly affect your outlook. If you find that you desire change and you are looking for a path, meditation will be a dynamic tool to lead you to the light.
Hi Joe,
We missed you in class on sunday. Hope you are feeling better and I also hope it wasn’t a yoga related injury. Do you think you will be able to teach tomorrow?
Love the blog.
Jeanine
Hi Jeanine – Thanks for reading the blog and I look forward to seeing you in class. Joe
Hi Joe-
Thank you for providing this guided meditation. I’ve decided to return to “what works” and do “what I need.” You have taught me the basics behind meditation and used to feel so much calmer and clear when doing it. Thank you for being my “calm inspiration.”
